Confidence returns gradually

Drive on your terms

Passing your test does not automatically mean every situation on the road feels comfortable. Plenty of full licence holders in Derby come back for refresher driving lessons after a long break from driving, after a stressful experience behind the wheel, or simply because there are particular roads, manoeuvres or conditions they have always avoided. There is no shame in it, and no fixed curriculum to follow - a refresher lesson is built entirely around what you personally want to work on.

Some people book a single lesson before a big drive or a new job that involves motorway commuting. Others want a short course of two or three lessons to rebuild general confidence after months or years away from driving. Dave will ask what is actually worrying you or holding you back, then plan lessons that address that directly, rather than working through a generic learner syllabus you have already passed.

Driver building confidence during a refresher driving lesson

What refresher lessons can cover

  • Motorway and dual carriageway driving
  • Roundabouts and busy junctions
  • Parking and tight manoeuvres
  • Driving at night or in poor weather
  • Getting used to a new or unfamiliar car
  • General confidence after a long break

Who books refresher lessons

Refresher lessons are popular with drivers returning to the road after having children, after an illness or injury, or after simply not needing a car for a few years. They are equally useful for confident drivers who have moved to Derby from elsewhere and want a local instructor to show them how the roundabouts, one-way systems and busier junctions around the area actually behave before they tackle them alone.

Some learners also book a refresher lesson or two shortly after passing their test, once the reality of driving without an instructor in the car sinks in. There is nothing wrong with wanting a bit more supervised practice on the specific roads or situations that still feel unfamiliar - it is a sensible way to bed in the skills you already have.

Format, pricing and area

Refresher lessons are flexible - book a single session or a short course, whichever suits what you need. They are charged at the standard rate of £45 per hour, with a ten-hour block available for £400 if you would like several sessions. Available across Derby, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Stapleford, Sandiacre, Breaston, Draycott, Chilwell and Beeston.

Do I need my licence details before booking?+

Just let Dave know you hold a full licence and roughly how long it has been since you last drove regularly, so he can plan a sensible first lesson.

Can I just book one lesson to try it out?+

Yes. Many people book a single refresher lesson first and decide afterwards whether they would like more, rather than committing to a block straight away.

What if I'm nervous about a specific thing, like motorways?+

That is exactly what refresher lessons are for. Tell Dave what is worrying you and the lesson will focus on that directly, at a pace that feels manageable.
